Liesel doesn't know who she would talk to that's far away in this city. Maybe the phone will let her talk to Max, or Rudy, but she doesn't think that's how it works. "How far away?" she asks, and she doesn't say it but the meaning is clear. Can she talk to her family? Maybe she should just get back on the train and hope it takes her straight back to Molching. But this doesn't even seem like Germany anymore, so she's not so sure.

For now, she follows him to his apartment, stuffing the phone back into the envelope. The promise of food is too tempting, and she can always find her way back to the train station later.

"Did you bring your dog here?" she asks, curious. She's never known anyone who had a dog but he seems very fond of it. Maybe he brought it here with him on the train.
