There's a missing singer.

Neve had been just finishing up another case when a young woman approached her with details of her missing friend. Vivian Le Blanc is a singer for Lily's Rest, a hole in the wall lounge with big aspirations. Le Blanc's friend, the one who hired Neve, hasn't seen her in four days. That's a problem, and not only because she waited so long to come to Neve about it.

Being a Darrow native, it's likely that Le Blanc hasn't disappeared, and so Neve isn't worried about that. Which means something a little more nefarious is afoot.

Sure, it could be innocent. There's a shot that Le Blanc is sick and can't sing so she's hiding away — or wants some space for some other reason. But Neve doubts it, and if she treats it like that's a real possibility without first finding evidence to suggest it could be true, then she might miss the real evidence.

cut for length )

Neve isn't a singer. She's a detective. If she'd wanted to be a singer, well. She would have been disappointed in that career path. But she'd shown up under too short notice for the owner to test her skill — which had broadly been the point — and so now he gets to hear every dropped note firsthand. But she isn't here to launch a singing career.

She's here to catch a kidnapper, and hopefully stop a murder.

[ Neve's singing debut! Jk jk. Neve is an absolutely terrible singer (bc I said so), but she fully knows it and isn't embarrassed by it. It's time for some detective work! If you know Neve, be the person she called for backup! Or if you don't, be a patron of the club and witness the scene about to unfold! If you'd rather, you could also bump into her earlier in the afternoon while she's dress shopping and help her find something that'll work for a ""fancy"" lounge singer! Set largely to after dark, and open to all forever and ever. ]

Late Oct 2025:
So it would have been with a rather subdued air that she actually crossed the threshold, except that the dogs heard her voice through the back door and are waiting to swarm her with a great deal of whining, tail wagging, and shoving her about with their noses. "Yes, yes," she says as Cú winds around the back of her legs and Sadie actually heaves herself up to put her paws on Greta's shoulders and sniff at her chin. "Oh, for goodness' sake. I'm all right, I promise."

Greta depetrifies following the conclusion of Macha’s stay in Darrow, and Regan and Lari are there to take care of her in their respective ways.

She isn't entirely sure where she stands with him. Sometimes, it almost feels like he's flirting with her, but then he'll shut it off completely, which...weird. Still, he's pretty and nice and she likes talking to him. Which goes a long way.

Your pup has just ingested a large quantity of truth potion. Any questions asked of them they have to answer truthfully, whether they want to or not! There's absolutely no way around it.

Tag in your pup's name, and others will ask them questions. Nothing is off the table!

The air feels heavy, beading up on Lee's skin to mix with the sweat breaking as he unloads the truck. There's a storm coming, maybe. But it's a long ways off yet. They've got time.

In summer, George and Lee spend time at their favourite hiding spot.

He could just be looking for a quiet night in, but the way he so deliberately knelt at Lee's feet is a tell that he's looking for something specific. It's been a while, and Lee can't help the spark he feels low in his gut. It means so much that George trusts him like this, that when everything feels like too much he can find solace and safety in Lee. It feels like a miracle.

Sometimes, George needs some help living in the moder world.

He thinks he's dreaming, at first. He's sitting outside a cafe, working on a chapter for the new novel, the one inspired by Derry, and he's having trouble with a scene that's about this version of George, this boy in a yellow coat in the rain, and he looks up, and there it is: a red balloon, right above a storm drain, bobbing in the wind.

It should be innocent, and he knows that. It's been lost by a child, the weight on the end of its string holding it in place, and the drain is just a drain, and there's nothing lurking underneath. He knows that. He knows it.

He has dreams just like this, is the thing.

His stomach lurches sickly. He looks away and looks back, in case that'll do it -- reset the world somehow. But it doesn't. It's still there.

He stands up so abruptly that his chair clatters backwards. He's not so naive as to think that there's nothing here that can hurt him -- he's been in Darrow too long for that -- but he does know that a balloon won't. It can't.

He walks over to sit, taking it by the screen and yanking it closer towards him before he stabs it with his pen. The bang it makes when it pops seems unnaturally loud, even with the sound of the city behind it.

"Fuck you," snaps Bill, standing with the rags of the balloon hanging from it's string. He's not sure what to do with it now.

ooc: Bill is having a small existenial crisis. Feel free to have your pup happen along at any point.

A year ago, had you asked Shion if he would voluntarily spend time with any of the Sunshine City wolf pack, the answer would have been an emphatic no, or possibly just a derisive laugh. Much to his dismay, things have changed. It's not that he enjoys Ruslan's company, although the kid isn't too bad compared to his packmates. It's just that Ruslan has somehow wormed his way into various aspects of Shion's life. He seems to regard Solon as something like a friend, and he's plainly stated that he feels protective of Sophie, even if he doesn't know her very well, something that makes Shion feel huffy and defensive.

He could avoid or ignore those. Unfortunately, the worst one is Nightball. Ruslan got it into his head somehow that he wanted to bring the game to Darrow, along with one or two of his little friends, and like hell is Shion not going to be involved. Drembleydrop season is over and it's way too hot to play either game yet anyway, but Nightball season starts in the fall, and they might be able to host some games then if they get things settled now.

[ Hello, come play with the boys! Find them talking about Nightball before the kerfluffle, if you so desire, or catch one or both with their feathers ruffled and Shion being Very Loud. Open to all, ST/LT welcome. ]

Jae-eun really did not think it was possible for him to be weak to a young girl calling him oppa. It's a ridiculous trope that has never once appealed to him, not least because he assumed that sort of thing only worked on straight men, which no one has ever accused him of being. Until Darrow, though, until Hilde, he'd never had a little sister. He'd never had any sister at all, any family but his mother and, eventually, Sihyun.

Running into Rumi up at Kagura was pure chance, though they'd had a friend in common at the time. Mira's disappearance has weighed heavily on Rumi, though she doesn't typically talk about it, not in any serious terms. He recognizes it, though. She's bright and extroverted in a way he's never been nor wanted to be, but there's a part of her so familiar to him he finds it worrying at times, that perfectionist drive, the urge to push aside anything bothersome and dive into her music, stubborn and determined to the point of recklessness.

He's come a long way in the last half a decade. He's not, he's sure, what anyone would really consider mentally stable, if they knew the things that went on in his head, but he's surviving. A lot of the time, he even likes being alive. He still has nightmares, something he's sorry to Sihyun for, knowing he has to wake up now and then to Jae-eun panicking, not quite awake, too overwhelmed to breathe. The memories will never go away completely, and neither will the guilt. Most days, though, are quiet and simple, and he likes it that way. He hasn't completely let go of his perfectionism, hasn't broken free of his obsessive tendencies, but he's managed to step back a great deal. He hopes one day Rumi can do the same.

He hopes, too, that he's not making a mistake now, following her lead. He'd thought after hanging out at the lodge, that would be the end of it, but her encouragement continued and slowly he relented. He'll just be in the background, playing the keyboard while she and Zoey sing. It's a chance to play music without being the focus, and a keyboard isn't quite the same as a piano in terms of the feeling it evokes in him when he plays. The music they sing isn't anything like what he used to practice for hours on end, long past the point of reason.

It's a weekday evening, the sun not yet fully set, when they find a spot on the boardwalk to perform. Rumi has her guitar, but with Jae there to play the keyboard, she and Zoey can focus on rap and vocals instead. Until he met them, that wasn't a combination he'd given much thought. He's never hated pop music. He just figured it wasn't for him, pallid compared to the works of Schubert and Beethoven. There's complexity there, though, if he looks in the right places, and in the artistry and passion of the girls when they talk about music. There's still a lot for him to learn. He'd thought he'd given up on that.

"Oh, this is so much better," Rumi groans, unfolding a chair and leaning her guitar atop it, leaving her case open wide in front of them. "It's been a billion degrees all day. All week."

"It's still hot," Jae points out wryly.

"Yeah, but..." Rumi draws in a deep breath, stretching as she looks out toward the water. "At least it's bearable now. Can't sing if we're all melted."

He's learned new songs for them, including some they and Mira wrote together, and he's determined to get them right. Still, it's not as much pressure as he'd thought it might be. As people gather, they're clearly stopping because Zoey and Rumi have beautiful voices and commanding stage presence, not because of him. He can play and be part of it while still staying in the background, though the thrill of that has his energy growing as the sun dips lower and the evening wears on.

[ Catch a busking performance by two-thirds of Huntrix, with Jae on the keys! Tag Jae, Rumi, or both after the show, between songs, making a request, dancing along to some summer kpop bops, interrupting them with a misplaced frisbee, or anything you can think of. Open to all! ]
